Michael Welz, CSI, CDT | Quality Assurance Director
Mike began his association with Bernardon in 1986. As Quality Assurance Director,
his chief responsibilities include helping to maintain quality assurance procedures for
the firm in order to build high quality into the construction design process and minimize
the reliance on last-minute error detection. He also maintains a high level of experience
and proficiency in building construction detailing, familiarity with AIA and CSI
documents, and fluency with building code applications and industry-wide trends and
innovations. His experience as an on-site representative, working closely with Owners
and Construction Managers and maintaining document and specification compliancy
during construction, has given him a unique understanding of the key considerations to
look for during the QA process.
Bernardon’s Quality Assurance Program has several parts and the final review is an
item-by-item, multi-step procedure of reviewing and checking the documents. This
process is performed on each element of the documents and coordinated with all Education
disciplines. Quality is managed through milestones identified in the design process,
allowing a thorough document review prior to issuing. Quality Control/Quality Assurance Bachelor of Architecture,

Schematic Design Review
The Quality Assurance Director’s initial involvement begins by working with the Certified Construction Documents
design team at the schematic design phase. At this point, the initial design is Technologist (CDT), Construction
evaluated and reviewed. Any research required by unique project requirements Specifications Institute (CSI)
are identified and performed by the project team under the review of the Quality Certified Accessibility Inspector/
Assurance Director. Plans Examiner, International
Design Development Review Code Council (ICC)
The project design and production team, in conjunction with the Quality Assurance
Director and the firm Principals, expand the scope of technical review to that of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers,
specific materials and building systems planned for the project. Project-specific Construction Quality Management
consultant coordination interface areas are identified and a process is developed to for Contractors
address these issues during the course of construction document production.
Construction Document Review
During the Construction Documents phase, a full discipline project review is
undertaken. The interdisciplinary team approach verifies that the construction
plans and all aspects of technical development and specifications are on-track.
All interior and exterior materials and engineering systems are finalized by each
discipline.
“When performed properly, the Quality Assurance process will benefit all parties
involved and help to ensure a successful project.”
