friends that loved her dearly; some of which she was a
second mother to. Her second marriage to Lester Scott lasted several years until he passed away in 1994.
During the 1960s – 1970s she helped to integrate the schools in Venice, Illinois so that her children and other
black students could attend better schools. She was always upbeat, active and witty. She kept her home opened to
friends and family. She was an avid gardener which we believe kept her healthy. Luziel lived off the land, sewed and always had her house together. Luziel had an active church life and was a founding member of
Canaan Galilee Baptist Church. She was a member of the Alton Bowling League and racked up many
trophies as she had triple digit scores. She learned piano later in life, belonged to the Eagle Park
Seniors’ Club that was active in the community and the Salvation Army women’s group. Her social life
was very alive even through her eighties.
In 2002, her daughter Joyce moved to Illinois to
help support her daily living in her home. In 2012, she received in-home care from her daughter Arbrella,
son-in law Henry, son Hal, and daughter-in-law Alberta along with a host of caregivers that helped look after her up until the very end.
At 92 years old, Luziel led a full, abundant and zestful life. She will be missed by many and her sweet spirit will carry on in the lives of those she left behind. She would not want us to be sad. I can’t count very many times that she was not joyful even in tough times. Her legacy of love, life and happiness will live in us forever.
