CHAPTER THIRTEEN | Captains Cabin

Five minutes before landing, we went to the captain's cabin.
The door was open, so we stepped inside. Mrs.Olien came too.
There were many pictures, drawings, and clothes in the room.

One picture was of his mom. His dad was in a picture frame
hanging on the wall. Mrs. Olien cried as she looked at each photo.

The drawings showed his plans, and we decided to keep them.
The one thing that caught my eye was the underneath of his bed.

A couple of journals and prints lay there. I went under and
grabbed the journal. A diary. The diary was filled with notes,

scribbles, and stories. I skimmed the journal and started crying as
well. Everybody came to my side and knew why I was crying.
The diary was filled with hopes to see his mom and sister and

about his life. Mrs. Olien excused herself and went to the dock.
We looked around a little more, but nothing else seemed

important. I grabbed the diary, and we headed back out to the
pier where Mrs. Olien stood sobbing. We felt her melancholy in

the air and tried to cheer her up. Everybody stood at the pier
with Mrs. Olien while I sat down in the corner. I opened up the

diary entry of today to understand more. Nobody came to the
funeral, and his mother just sent him a letter that said R.I.P. The
rest of the nights, he could not sleep, and he thought he had no

purpose in life. I stopped rereading each sentence with care. The
captain had thoughts like me. Seeing the thoughts of Mrs. Olien

gave me an idea of what my family and friends were feeling like
at home. I kept on reading, pushing back tears. I saw the picture

of the captain at the front of the book, and I tore it out. Putting it
in my bag, I ran back to the cabin once more. I grabbed the

handkerchief I stole from my mom. It still had her scent. I
breathed it in, knowing the call that would come soon. I took a
