KR: It's funny how things work out. So, Violet just turned 10 a couple days
ago and she's at the age where everything I do is lame and she would never
want to see my comedy. She thinks that swearing is lame because I swear
sometimes. She'll say, "Swearing is something that mommies do."
Meanwhile, she thinks that getting her homework done on time and being
polite and really, just being British are all great. That's her rebellion.
I think its funny that you just are who you are. It absolves yourself of a lot
of the parenting responsibility when you see just how themselves your
children are, no matter what you do. So, no, she's not interested in seeing
my comedy, though she does love comedy. She likes Miranda Sings. She loves
Anna Kendrick. We'll have a laugh at home sometimes and she thinks I'm
funny, but she certainly understands that it's my job. She doesn't think its
cool and she has no interest in seeing it.
AH: That is definitely a common thing, kids who shun whatever
they identify as something their parents do or like. And I've
heard it a lot from other comics.
KR: I think Violet definitely notices, at least in the U.K., where we live.
Obviously, people recognize me there. They come over to say hello and she
likes that, but she's not a fan. She's like that there are fans, but she's not one
of them. She's like, "Is this going to get us priority tickets to see Lizzo?
Great, then I'm in." She loves the benefits of my work but not the actual
work.
But I think she does trust me. She knows that even though I mention her, I
never slag her off. People always ask me, "What's the line? Don't you feel
badly talking about your daughter?" I really don't feel that I do talk about
my daughter. I say little things that are all celebratory, but they're oblique
enough that it's really about me. It's not about her. It's simply my reaction
to this character.
