Bridget Christie
In a nutshell: Shot at London’s Hoxton Hall, the Gloucester stand-up’s Netflix
debut is an enjoyable showcase for her pithy humour. She’s flinty and hard-
punching, but her deprecating manner makes for a nice contrast from the gleaming
teeth and unsinkable confidence of Netflix’s American comedy stable.
Best gag: “A woman’s looks are so important, women are often asked to give people
a twirl so they can be approved in 3D.”

               5. Hasan Minhaj: Homingcoming King (2017)

               Hasan Minhaj
In a nutshell: The Indian-American’s upbringing in an overwhelmingly white
California suburb is fertile source material as he ruminates on identity and prejudice.
He’s earnest – but also funny, such as when recalling his English teacher’s refusal to
call him anything other than “Saddam Hussein”.
Best gag: “I recently got married. It was like a reverse Lord of the Rings situation – I
got a ring and I lost half of my powers.”
               6. Tracy Morgan: Staying Alive (2017)

               Tracy Morgan
In a nutshell: The car crash that put Morgan into a coma provides the emotional
centre-point of the 30 Rock star’s comeback. “We can get right to it,” he says, arriving
on stage in a white suit. “Everybody in here knows I got hit by that f---ing Walmart
truck.” It’s a moving introduction – but even without the heartstring-tugging
               backstory, Morgan is compelling.
Best gag: “It could have been worse – I could have been hit by a Bob’s Furniture
Discount Truck. You know they ain’t got no f---ing money.”
               7. Bill Burr: I’m Sorry You Feel That Way (2014)

               Bill Burr
In a nutshell: Boston comic Burr’s first Netflix collaboration was filmed in black-
and-white, the classy sheen in contrast to his bar-brawl humour. Shot in Atlanta,
Georgia, the routine touches on institutional racism and his loathing of veganism.
Best gag: “Something has to die every day in order for me to live. Something’s got to
get its beak chopped off, feathers yanked, and an upper cut to its jaw, just in order for
               me to survive.”
