News: Katherine Ryan Talks About Her Civil
Partnership and the Election
By Bruce Dessau on 14/12/2019
Comedian Katherine Ryan has revealed that she and her boyfriend went through a civil partnership
ceremony earlier this year.
In an interview with Jonathan Ross for his Saturday night chat show she explained that she had
decided against a formal marriage.
Her boyfriend/partner is Bobby Kootstra, who was her childhood sweetheart when she was growing
up in Canada. They then lost contact but they bumped into each other again in Ontario and an adult
romance started
The civil partnership ceremony took place in Denmark because it was “quickest and easiest”.
“It was a lovely day...It’s perfect having a civil partner. We didn’t have a wedding, I didn’t need to put
on a white dress and pretend to be a virgin, that ship has sailed.”
She added that her daughter Violet had had mixed feelings at first, “because it had just been the two
of us against the world for a really long time. She was not trusting of my decisions. She put Chanel
glasses on and moped around Tivoli Gardens, but we thought it was funny about an hour after it
happened. She is happy now though, it worked out.”
On Thursday night Ryan was one of the presenters of C4's Alternative Election Night coverage.
According to a story in the NME afterwards Ryan “felt sick” when she heard about the Tory majority.
"“I did feel worried and upset at first. My heart was beating and I felt sick. But I always look towards
the future; we can’t live in the past. Alright, what can we do now? We always have to move forward."
She ws speaking at the Global Citizen Awards on Friday.
She added: "People are gutted, but I think there is hope. You look to people like Jess Phillips who is
definitely going to revamp the Labour party, they’re gonna look at what happened tonight. I look
forward to a Britain where hopefully Jess Phillips is our prime minister.”
The Jonathan Ross Show is at 10.10pm on ITV1 on Saturday, December 14. The other guests are
Rebel Wilson, Jason Derulo, Keane, Jofra Archer and Penn Jillette.
