NEW SOUTH WALES
7 MARCH
On Sunday 7 March the Broken Hill Field and Game Association conducted a 50 Target Graded Handicap Championship shoot. The event was sponsored by Jeff Glasson which provided for a good range of trophies for the winning shooters. Shoot day was warm, sunny and clear, a good day for shooting clay targets, and the organisers were rewarded with a very good attendance of 29 shooters.
Range marshals Josh, Richard, Gerard, Ashy and Clay, set a very enjoyable range for our shooters. The degree of difficulty seemed to be just a smidgin on the easy side, more than half the shooters burst their handicap and the rest were not far away. So, a fun day of shooting was had with some very good scores shot and some very close results.
The best off gun total for the shoot was an excellent 43/50 shot by Ricky Jones. Ricky has recorded some very good results recently and he needed his best effort to win the High Gun medal on this occasion with a half dozen rivals right on his tail at the finish.
The remaining prizes were awarded for handicap totals.
Jeff Glasson had one of his better days out, shooting consistently for a good score of 51, and he finished a point clear of the opposition to win the first place prize in A
Grade. Ross Howse had a blinder in B Grade shooting 59, the best handicap total for the shoot, and he needed every point to stay ahead of the opposition who were just a single point behind. The result in C Grade was a slightly more comfortable win for Ashden Hall who shot particularly well for a good score of 58. Cassie McEvoy shot consistently and well and scored 52 to win the Ladies Grade, just a couple of shots in front of Elissa Tweedie.
At the conclusion of shooting Association President Rod Weaver made a very special presentation to a very special member of our Association. Peter Ellis has been a member of our Association for 40 years, president for 15 years, a committee member for more than 30 years, and was made a Life Member of the Association in 2002. Peter was President of the Association during the formative years of our clay target shooting range and always led from the front at the many working bees that were held. Peter was also one of our very best shooters winning our Club Championship in 1984 and again in 1991, and he represented our club with great distinction at many clay target shoots both at home and away. Peter is a keen and experienced bushman, hunter and fisherman and he organised and led many field trips that enabled our members to enjoy the bush, particularly along the Darling River, in better days. He also pioneered ocean fishing trips for the Association to the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia, a tradition of some 30 years that continues unabated to this day.
Peter, who recently turned 80 years of age, is relocating with wife Rhonda to Adelaide to be closer to family and he plans to retire from shooting. It is disappointing that we won’t get to see him smoke up any more of those fast departing clay targets that appear to be just too far away. But Peter leaves us with a magnificent legacy of service to the Broken Hill Field and Game Association for which the rest of us will be forever grateful, and we wish him every happiness in his new home.
28 MARCH
On Sunday 28 March the Broken Hill Field and Game Association conducted a 75 target Simulated Field Graded Championship shoot. The shoot was sponsored by Andrew Ashwood, a very keen and hardworking member, who very generously provided an excellent range of prizes for the winning shooters. The day was sunny and warm with barely any breeze to disturb the targets. Conditions were perfect for shooting clays and organisers were therefore a tad disappointed with the attendance of just 20 shooters.

50 TARGET HANDICAP CHAMPIONSHIP
The range was set by Ashy, Gerard, Neville and Coxy, and Brian supervised. Five stations were set and were shot three times to make up the competition. The targets were maybe just a smidgin more difficult than average, but they were also a bit different from what has been set recently and some needed a bit of working out. The best shooters, those who engaged the brain before the trigger, recorded some very impressive totals, while the rest missed maybe a few more than they should have.
The best score off the gun was an excellent total of 62 that was shot by Clay Johnston. Despite a slightly shaky final round Clay hung on by that vital one shot to win A Grade and a well deserved High Gun Medal. Anthony Elliott and Jason Butcher both shot very consistently, and very well, to win their respective grades by comfortable margins at the finish. Anthony shot 57 to win B Grade, and Jason shot 49 to win C Grade. Tom Casey was the lone ranger in the Junior Grade but improved dramatically from first to last round, doubling his score, and he shot 43 for a well deserved first place prize.
