My Experience of the La Soufriere Volcano
M
y recollection of the recent eruption of the
La Soufriere volcano on the island of St Vincent
and the Grenadines was rather terrifying.
Although it had given several warning signs
before it first erupted in the early morning on
April 9, 2021, many people, including myself who
are living in the red and orange zones, were left
with dreadful experiences and to an extent,
traumatized.
My family and I live in a small village called Old
Sandy Bay located in the “Red Zone”, which
means the area is highly prone to volcanic
activities. As a matter of fact, my village is located
directly on the slopes of the volcano. Therefore,
we were experiencing early signs that suggested
an impending disaster. First, on 27th December
2020, the volcano started erupting effusively,
forming a lava dome inside the summit, which
grew rapidly .
