Caribbean Studies: an overview
Module 2 – Issues in Caribbean development
This module looks closely at economics, as well as at history, society, culture and
politics. It focuses on the various factors that have influenced the development of
the Caribbean region. Module 2 covers the following eight themes, each with its
own subthemes. As with Module 1, you will need to demonstrate your knowledge
of these in order to perform well when you are assessed.
1: Concepts and indicators of development
You must be able to explain certain concepts that are key to understanding the
concept of development. Additionally, you must be able to identify and explain
the quantitative and qualitative indicators of development.
2: Factors that promote or hinder development
Linking to the previous theme, you will learn to assess political, cultural,
social, economic, technological and geographical factors with regard to
development in the Caribbean. Tourism is also assessed in relation to its
contribution to development.
3: Globalisation and development
You will be expected to assess how globalisation promotes or hinders
Caribbean development and also to identify and explain how the Caribbean
has responded to globalisation.
4: The integration movement
Attempts at integration and their significance are identified in this theme.
You must identify the achievements and challenges of integration in the
region, making references to the establishment of certain organisations that
were formed out of regional integration.
5: Contributions of sport
You must assess how sport influences the development of the Caribbean
region. You must be aware of the various sporting events in the region and the
various athletes who participate. The challenges that sport faces in the region
must also be understood.
6: Intellectual traditions
This theme focuses on the study of the ideas, concepts, beliefs, debates and
theoretical standpoints that have significantly shaped the development of the
region. Various forms of intellectual traditions need to be understood and
appreciated so that you can assess how these have shaped the development of
the region.
7: Roles and functions of the mass media
You will need to familiarise yourself with the various forms of mass media that
are present in the Caribbean and how these promote or hinder development.
8: Social justice
This theme focuses on the ‘people’ element in the development of the region,
and the repercussions of social justice or injustice. You must understand the
various indicators of development in this area.
