The Tibetan Plateau The Qinghai Tibet train at Golmund station
Qinghai Tibet Train: The Qinghai-Tibet railway is a high-elevation railway and the world’s longest
railroad built atop a plateau, which connects Xining, Qinghai province, to Lhasa, Tibet Autonomous
Region in China. The total length of the railway is 1,956 kms and the journey takes about 22 hours
from Xining to Lhasa, and passes through one of the longest railway tunnels in the world and stops at
Tanggula which happens to be the highest railway station in the world at 16,627 feet beating Peru’s
Ticlio at 15,702 feet. Bombardier transportation built 361 high-altitude passenger carriages with
special oxygen – enriched and UV protected facilities. 53 of the 361 are luxury sleeper carriages for
tourists with large vista view windows and a dining car. It’s a journey of a lifetime.
