A FILM REVIEW- 3 IDIOTS
SRIJITA TALUKDAR, CLASS IX/X
‘3 Idiots’ is a 2009 Indian coming-of-age comedy/drama film. It is
edited and directed by Raj Kumar Hirani and produced by Vidhu Vinod
Chopra. Abhijat Joshi has written the wonderful screenplay. The film
was inspired by the novel ‘Five Point Someone’ by Chetan Bhagat.
The story is about two fri ends who embark on a quest for a long
lost buddy. On this journ ey, they face a long-for otten bet, a
wedding they must cr sh, and a funer l that goes out of contro l.
As they make their way thro ugh the ri sky landscape, an inner
journ ey thro ugh memory lane is ignited- the story of their fr e-
thinking fri end Rancho who in his own way, touched and alter d
their lives for the better.
The three idiots, Rancchoddas Shyamaldas Chanchad (Aamir Khan),
Raju Rastogi (Sharman Joshi), and Farhan Qureshi (R. Madhavan) are
perfect archetypes of the new age Indian who is essentially a non-
conformist, questioning outmoded givens, choosing to live life on his
own terms and chartering new roads that consciously skirt the rat
race. Rancho, the protagonist, stresses on the phrase “All is well”
indicating that life is meant to be lived with a positive attitude and by
having faith in one’s self. The Director also focuses on the staid,
mechanical manner in which education is imparted resulting in
students being treated more like machines. The setting of the film is a
prestigious engineering college and at the center of it all is Rancho, a
genius and a rebel. While Aamir pitches in a near-perfect portrayal of
Rancho, the free-spirited innovator, Madhavan and Sharman are
perfectly in sync too. Kareena as an independent-minded medical
student is winsome. A special mention for Boman Irani who is
impeccable as `Virus', the stern Principal.
