Bahrain and the British, 1921-1922 677

would bo tho beat raoans of ending tho prosont atute of ul'fairs ana
that if it oould bo taken tho Sheikh ana hia family v/oula bo
alarraod and would mend their ways* if hov/ovor this is not oonsider-
od suitabio I would suggest that tho Sheikh should bo informod that
many complaints havo boon rocoivod of tho tyranny exorcised on his
subject3 by himself and his family, und that the Government us pro-
tooting powor cannot acquiosco in such uuuso of authority, and that
therefore they have authorized tho Political iigont to intervened
when glaring cases of oppression are brought to his notice, and
extend .British protection temporarily to the oppressed party ponding
            enquiry into his case.
This is only a palliativo measure of course ana will cause
friction botwoen tho Sheikh ana tho Political agency, but tho
present state of affairs puts the Political agent as representative
of the Protecting or in an extremely invidious position. Bahrain
subjocts naturally look to him to improve their position, ana it is
vory difficult for him to refuse to assist victims of such gross
oppression as are. instanced in soof tho casos mentioned in tho
            enclosure to this letter.
                                                 I huve etc.,
