               Mission were not the sort of men and women to be easily dis­


               couraged.

                         If the Mission was strong internally, it was still vul­


               nerable to outside forces. The early 1330’s ushered in two

               events that were to have an enormous impact on the Mission


               and shake both Western and Middle Eastern society to their

               very foundations. In the West, the great stock market crash
    i

               of 1929 signaled the beginning of the Depression. In the

     a         Arabian Gulf, oil was discovered on the island of Bahrain

               in 1933. The effect these two events were to have and the

               Mission’s response to them forms yet another chapter of its

    1          long and eventful history in the Gulf.
