(b) Trade, A full report on the Imports and exports
for the year will be found in the Kuwait Trade Report, a non
confident ial publication.
(o) Customs. About the end of the year, the Customs
import duty was increased from to 6*ijC ad valerora. The
object of the increase i3 to provide additional funds for the
Education and '••edical Departments. These departments will
share the increased income between them.
(d) Council. The Council met from time to time and
seem to have discharged their duties with discretion.
(e) He3icnl. i
(i) The number of patients treated at the Indian
Government Dispensary for the year was 13,336.
(ii) The Kuwait medical establishment which consists
of two qualified medical officers from -Syria has been augmented
by the arrival of a trained nurse and midwife from ?yria. The
Stats Dispensary is clean and well run and there is little
doubt that the doctors are capable men. TOrk on the Etate
Hospital is progressing slowly partly through lack of funis
and partly because the Kuwait Government are not yet certain
that they will be able to obtain the requisite iron gilders
anl other fittings from India anl they are therefore unwilling
to spend money on a building which may have to remain unfini
shed for some years.
(ill). The .American yisslon continues to do exoellen
medical work. On 20th of C-otober Dr. C.3.G, Vylraa, O.B.B.,
M.D • t the Superintendent of the ttieslon Hospital, retired
after a period of 29 years* work in Kuwait. Ho and his wife
are moot estimable characters and their loss will be felt,
