Gertrude Bell’s own library of more than 2,000 books, presented to
the University Library of Newcastle upon Tyne after her death, along
with some 6,000 photographic negatives, manuscripts of published and
unpublished articles, letters to her family, periodicals, press cuttings
and other material, are listed in a catalogue compiled by Winifred
Cottcrill Donkin and published by the University in i960. Books from
the GLB collection listed here arc marked with an asterisk. In addition,
the archives of the Royal Geographical Society of London contain
twelve of Gertrude’s field notebooks with plans of churches and other
buildings, and copies of inscriptions, from Anatolia, Syria, Iraq and
Arabia, covering the period 1905-14, along with over 200 photographic
negatives from the 1913-14 journey and a notebook containing astro
nomical observations and altitudes.
