44 GERTRUDE BELL
as Lord Lieutenant of the North Riding of Yorkshire. He made a
ready impression on his audiences. In later years lie was usually
chauffeur-driven in a Daimler car. He was one of the most sought-
after speakers among the industrialists of his time, and it has been
said of him that he was a gifted actor. When off duty he was
usually to be found shooting, dressed in the tweeds of the country
                 > squire, or riding to hounds. He was well read and remarkably
energetic. But he was not greatly interested in the gritty matters
of production methods and techniques of which his father had
been a pioneer. He was a man given to the general rather than the
particular. There are clues to the adult Gertrude in the time and
climate of her growth to maturity.
