as I might deem politio and expedient, and tending to the preservation of his honor and the
security of tho country. Previous to tho receipt of tho Pacha’s rcoond letter, tho Mussaleem
received replies to his letters to Syud Sultan and Shaik Suggur. A negotiation commenced
between tho Mussalccm and Moolla Ibrahim Ali, the Commander of the Maskat Annual
Coffee Fleet, then lying at Bushiro, which I did not find it necessary to interfere. The dispute
botweeu tho Paoha anil Syud Sultan, of which I had long foreseen the issue, has been amicably
settled, the Maskat licet has repairod to 15ussorah, and actual friendly iutcicoursc hastiken

out taking one single inoasuro or exposing tho nation or the Honourable Company to the small
est political dilliculty, I liavo in tho Pacha's estimation rendered him a most essential service,
and given him the most unequivocal proof of my being authorized by you and personally
inclined lo promote his intorests on all occasions."

the Pasha of Baghdad did not immediately pay up the arrears of tribute i
witlilield for sevoral years. The Resident in the Gulf offered to mediate be
tween tho parties and communicated with the Political Agent at Baghdad.
But the Bombay Government wished that their interference should he limited
merely to producing a disposition to an amicable settlement, aud as Captain
Taylor could not succeed in inducing the Pasha to come to terms, tho Imam
was told that he was at liberty to pursue what course he pleased. Bis project
of an expedition agaiust Basrah was, however, checked by throats of the
Mahomed Ali Pasha aud ultimately abandoned.
