The French diplomatic correspondence on epidemics
in Oman between 1899-1900 AD
Abstract:
Documents from the French archives represent an important
source for tracing the evolution of the spread of certain deadly
diseases and epidemics that swept Oman at the end of the 19th
century AD. The subject of this study aims to reveal the details of
the correspondence of Consul “Paul Otavi”, which he delivered
to his Minister of Foreign Affairs in Paris on public health news
in Oman, and the spread of diseases and epidemics that accom-
panied it between 1899-1900 AD, in order to demonstrate pru-
dence and precaution on the one hand and to follow the evolution
and the reflection of the health situation on the general situation
of the region.
In presenting and studying these reports, it was concluded that
the French archives are an important source in codifying public
health news in Oman at the end of the 19th century AD, as they
revealed the citizen epidemics the more widespread and a census
of the number of dead and cured, in addition to a description of
the precautionary measures taken by Sultan Faisal bin Turki to
overcome the situation Critical sanitary conditions such as isola-
tion and the establishment of a quarantine for the injured.
