Foreword

much that will help them in understanding the strengths, weak
nesses and paradoxes of the Federation. I wish I had had a book like
this when I first started dealing with the Trucial Stales.
I venture to hope also that those readers who are citizens of the
United Arab Emirates will themselves find pleasure and advantage
in reading this book. Some of it they will think is wrong and perhaps
even unfair. But the author is their friend; her readers will become
their friends; and it is always useful to be able to see ourselves as our
                 friends see us.
