Abstract
This study aims to identify the most important factors that influenced the
emergence and development of Bahraini press. It provides a comprehensive
analysis of the media scene prior to 1939, and examines the evolution of the
Bahraini press from its initiation to the present day.
The study used a historical research methodology. The study findings can be
summarized as follows:
Bahrain’s economic prominence provided its citizens with opportunities for
engagement with and learning from other cultures. The relatively comfortable
economic situation at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th
centuries facilitated higher education abroad for Bahrainis and attracted
innovative minds from the Gulf region and beyond. The political stability and
the spread of educational opportunities contributed significantly to
comprehensive and sustainable human development. These factors fostered
a cultural and social movement that profoundly influenced public opinion in
Bahrain.
The establishment of cultural, literary, and social clubs, as well as libraries and
other institutions, has been pivotal in promoting cultural awareness and
providing an intellectual environment for the Bahraini society. Economic,
political, educational, and the cultural and social changes have had a notable
impact on the emergence and development of the press, influencing the
longevity of some newspapers and the cessation of others.
Based on these findings, the study recommends the creation of a digital
archive containing all issues of the historical Bahraini newspapers and
magazines. It also suggests further investigation into the factors contributing
to the persistence of certain publications and the reasons behind the
discontinuation of others.
