Residence of the Resident at Shir as.
257. For some years past Shiraz has been the summer head-quarters of the
Political Resident in the Persian Gulf and he has been provided with a suitable
house at that station by the Indian Government.
Under the scheme for the reorganisation of the Consular service we have
seen, it Was decided to replace the native agent at Shiraz by a Consul drawn
from the Levant Service.
In reply to an enquiry made by Colonel Kemball he was told in the Foreign
Department letter No. 2486, External A.,

dated 19th October 1903, that the pro
posed appointment of a Consular officer at Shiraz would not affect-the question
of the Resident visiting Shiraz annually during the summer.

257-A. In his letter No. 79, dated 12th February 1905, Major Cox urged on
Government the necessity of appointing a

Lieutenant C. H. Gabriel was at this time in the Gulf, having been
permitted to accompany Mr. J. G. Lorimer on Gazetteer work on the condition
that he paid his own travelling charges. Mr. Lorimer had to leave the Gulf in
March. While the period of Lieutenant Gabriel's deputation with him expired on
31st May, Major Cox proposed to keep Lieutenant Gabriel at Bushire for
Gazetteer work and personal assistance. This he was authorized to do, while
the question of providing Second Assistant was under consideration (Telegram,
dated 16th March 1905).
257-B. On the 1 st of June, Lieutenant Gabriel was appointed a probationer
for the Political Department of the Government, and was placed temporarily
under the orders of the Resident in the Gulf with effect from the 26th May
1905. On the expiry of a year or whenever his services could best be spared,
he was to be sent to the Punjab to undergo the training prescribed for all pro
bationers (Foreign Department letter to Major Cox, No. iiso-G., dated 1st
June 1905).
