668                        SLAVE TRADE.

                   those of the East India Company, and the said ship shall be restored
                   by sentence of the Court, it shall be lawful for the Commissioners of
                   Her Majesty’s Treasury, by warrant signed by any three or more of
                   them, to direct payment to be made out of the Consolidated Fund of the
                   United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, of any costs or damages
                   which may be duly awarded : Provided always, that nothing herein
                   contained shall exempt such officer from his liability to make good the
                   payments so made when lawfully called upon, either by the parties
                   interested therein or by order of the said Commissioners of Her Majes­
                   ty’s Treasury.
                     XVIII. And be it enacted, That when any seizure shall be made by
                                         any of the commanders, officers, and crews of
                    Treasury may repay to
                   the Seizor of any Vessel   Her Majesty’s ships, or of those of the East India
                   not condemned the ex­  Company, and judgment shall be given against
                   penses incurred by him.
                                         the seizor, or when such seizure shall be relin­
                   quished by him, it shall be lawful for the said Commissioners of Her
                   Majesty’s Treasury, if to their discretion it shall seem meet, by
                   warrant, signed by any three or more of them, to direct payment to be

                  incurred in respect of such seizure, or any proportional part thereof.

  i                    TRADE.—1838 to 1847.

                   Agreement with Shaikh Sultan bin Suggur, Chief of Ras-ool-Khy-
                       ma, ceding to British Cruisers the right of searching his Vessels
                       upon the high seas, when suspected of having Slaves on board ;
                       and also ceding the right of Seizure and Confiscation, in the event
                       of the suspicion being proved to be well founded.

                    In the event of vessels connected with my ports, or belonging to my
                  subjects, coming under the suspicion of being employed in the carrying
                  off (literally “ stealing”) and embarkation of slaves, men, women, or
                  children, I, Sultan bin Suggur, Shaikh of the Joasmee Tribe, do hereby
                  agree to their being detained and searched, whenever and wherever
                  they may be fallen in with on the seas, by the cruisers of the British
                  Government; and further, that upon its being ascertained that the
