                                               Military Operations North of Busrah

                                   The above map, published some weeks ago in the Literary Digest,
                                sets forth graphically the progress of British conquest in the Mesopo­
                                tamian Valley during the first year of the war. Since December last
                                the tide of fortune has turned against the British, and although an
                                expedition has been sent to the relief of the original force, which was

   t                            driven back to Kut-el-Amara, their fate and that of the whole enter­

                                prise is still somewhat in doubt. The outcome of this remote part of
                                the war is certain to affect profoundly our missionary work not only
                                at Busrah (spelled Basra on the map) but along the whole western
                                shore of the Persian Gulf.
