Eighteen slaves were manumitted in Bahrain during the year. At the com- slave Trade,
mencemeot of the year the Political Agent had not been granted authority to
issue Manumission certificates himself, and therefore the cases of 10 slaves
were submitted after investigation to the Political Resident, from whom
certificates were received in due course. In September 1905 the Political
Agent was himself authorized to manumit deserving oases, and under thi»
arrangement the other eight slaves were freed and helped to leave Bahrain.
The year has unfortunately shown a rather Berions recrudescenoe of rtrrri—
piracies and guori-piratical outrages. The notorious Ahmad bin Salman
opened the ball by seizing two boats on the 25th and 26th June, his family
being settled at the time at Anich close to Katif. The vietims were 2 men
killed and 2 seriously wounded while property valued at Rs. 8,600 was carried
           off.
About s month later a piracy was committed between Katif and Bahrain
by about 10 Bedouin who had possessed themselves of a "shuei ” (ownership
®ot discovered) and called themselves followers of Ahmad bin Salman.
