There was considerable excitement in Bahrain during the first few days
of July whilo exaggerated rumours were coming from the Qatar Peninsula.
His Highness the Ruler of Bahrain asked the Political Agent, Bahrain, for
written permission to allow the Naim Tribe to come to Bahrain. This was
granted and a party of Naim came across to Bahrain in August 1937.
His Highness the Shaikh of Bahrain later decided that in view of the ac
tion of tho Ruler of Qatar against the Naim Tribe, whom ho considered as
his subjects, ho was not disposed to continue tho transit duo privilege which
ho had previously extended to the Shaikh of Qatar. As a result cargo in
transit for Qatar is now required to pay tho usual duty of 5 per cent, as
against tho previous concessional rate of 2 per cent. His Highness also prohi
bited tho entry of Qatar subjects into Bahrain.
25. Slavery.—Forty-five slaves were manumitted by order of the Hon
ourable the Political Resident in tho Persian Gulf during the year as compared
•with twenty-four during tho year 1936.
26. Climate.—The summer of 1937 was very hot and conditions were
aggravated by the intense humidity which averaged 85 per cent, during the
months of July, August and September.
The winter was mild with very little rain.
H. WEIGHTMAN,
Political Agent, Bahrain.
