Opportunity was taken of His Highness’s stay in London to continue
tho negotiations for a new Treaty with the Muscat Stato to replace the Treaty
of Commorco and Friendship of 1891. Thcso negotiations wore conducted
by tho India OlTico with tho assistance of tho Political Resident, who was
put on deputation for this purpose. To anticipate tho events of 1939, the new
Treaty was finally signed at Muscat on tho 5th February by tho Sultan and
tho Political Resident as representing His Majesty’s Government.
PERSIAN SIDE.
Bushire District and Tangislan.—Tho disarmament of the tribes and tho
establishment of law and order by the Iranian Authorities in the more remote
districts continued. The condition of the peasantry of these districts and
the continued emigration of tho people to the Arab side of the Gulf was the
subject of an official enquiry by a Committee from tho ministry of the Interior.
Tho high prices of foodstuffs wore maintained during the year, wheat
being sold by the Revenue Authorities at almost doublo the purchase price.
As a result much wheat was smuggled into tho town.
Persian Navy.—The Persian Navy continued its patrolling of tho coast
and effected a few captures of sailing craft alleged to be engaged in smuggling.
No incidents occurred during the year in regard to the interference with
dhows of the Arab Shaikhdoms.
Relations with local Iranian Authorities.—These continued to bo most
friendly.
