                                     APPENDIX 1.
NOTES ON THE WORKING OF THE RESIDENCY DISPENSARY,
RUSH IRE, FOR THE YEAR 1939.
              1. Eieut.-Col. J. J. Rooney, I.M.S., was in charge throughout the year.
              2. 1st Class Assistant-Surgeon R. Euscy, I.M.D., was in Sub-charge through
          out. the year.
              3. Nothing of note occurred during the year. There were no epidemics.
              4. Climatically, the year was better than average. The hot season was
particularly mild and one of the best on record.
              5. The number of in-patients and outdoor attendances compared with those
of 1938 were as follows :—
                                                  Jn- Out
                                                patients. patients. Opcrations.
                1938 15 13,960 261
                1939 5 10,104 198
             G. The decrease in the number of attendances is mainly due to the Assistant-
Surgeon being forbidden to engage in private practice. Since the end of 1937
the Iranian Government have refused the issue of further licences to practice
to foreign practitioners, but the Assistant-Surgeon was unofficially permitted to
          practice until June.
             7. Malaria, as usual, was the most prevalent disease and accounted for more
than a quarter of the total number of attendances.

                                        J. J. ROONEY, Lieut.-Colonel,
                                                            Residency Surgeon.
