(fvj Activities of Petroleum Development (Qatar) Limited.—(a) Dril
ling operations were coulinued at No. 1 well Dukhan and a depth ol* 5,685 l'ect
was reached during the year. There was u promising show of oil and later
tests were highly satisfactory.
(b) No further attempt was made duriug the year to obtain a supply of
fresh well water in the Qatar Peninsula since geological tests ruled out the
possibility of substantial supplies being available, at least in the vieiidty of the
Oil Camp.
(c) During the year the question, of establishing an aerodrome for air
craft of the Company near their camp in Jcbcl Dukhan was under considera
tion ; the Air Liaison Officer visited the place in May and submitted a report on
the suitability of a landing place. No decision was , mude till the cud of the
year.
28. Truciat Coast.—The following were the Shaikhs of the various States
of the Trueial Coust throughout the year ;—
(1) Dubai .. Shaikh Sa’id biu Maktiun, Q.B.E.
(2) Sharjah -. Shaikh Sultan bin Saqv.
(3) Abu Dhabi .. Shaikh Shokhbut bin Sultan.
(4) Unun al Qaiwain .. Shaikh Ahmad biu Rashid.
(5) Ajman .. Shaikh Rashid bin Ilumaid.
(6) Has al Khaiiuah Shaikh $iiUuu bin Salim.
(7) Kalba .. Shaikh Ilmnad bin Sa’id (.Minor).
Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmad (Regent).
(ii) British Interests.—Mr. S. Broad was in charge of the Rest House of
the Imperial Airways Limited until the 16th December 1939 when he was re
lieved by Mr. B. L. Nelson.
(iii) Tours.—(a) The Honourable Lieutenant-Colonel C. G. Prior, C.I.K,
Political Resident in the Persian Golf arrived at Kalha on the 25th November
and visited Ras al Khaimah on the 27th, Umm al Qaiwain and Ajmau on the
28th, Sharjah on the 29th, Dubai on the 1st December and Abu Dhabi on the 3rd
December.
(b) H. Weightman, Esquire, I.O.S., Political Agent, Bahrain, visited the
Trucial Coast in April and June. Duriug these tours he visited all Shaikh-
donis except Has al Khainiab.
(c) Captain J. B. Howas, arrived at Sharjah on Die IIth October and took
over charge of his office as Political Officer, Trucial Coast. He visited all the
Trucial Sheikhdoms except Kalba.
# (d) The Residency Agent paid frequent visits to all Sheikhdoms during the
period under report.
(iv) Avialion.—(a) Imperial Airways continued to use Sharjah and
Dubai for land plane and flying boat services respectively throughout the
year.
(b) Flying boats and aeroplanes of the Royal Air Force paid several visits
to the various landing grounds and seaplane anchorages on the Trucial
Coast.
(v) Boi/ol Navi/.—Sloops of the Persian Gulf Division paid frequent visits
to the Trucial Coast.
(vi) Shipping.—During 1939, 56 British sloainers, 11 Japanese and 3 Dutch
steamers called at Dubai and Sharjah.
(vii) Medical.—(a) A Government Dispensary was opened in Dubai on the
1st June when Jamadar Nur Ahmad, M.D., arrived and took over charge of his
duties as Medical Officer, Trucial Coast. Attendance figures are very high,
averaging over 100 a day.
(b) The Residency Surgeon arrived in Sharjah on the 20th November and

, and Disturbances.—In March the people of Dubai began to
exlnhit dissatisfaction with the work of the State Majlis. Taking advantage of
the situation, the Shaikh of Dubai made a surprise attack on Daira on the 29th
