88 PERSIAN GULP ADMINISTRATION REPORT
The American Consul has visited His Highness and has received row
visits. Ho has also paid official visit# 4
Foreign intemu. Commanders and the Admiral of ^
Majesty’s Navy on various occasions. During August the American Con^i
made a ehort walking tour in the interior, in the course of which he visits
\7athdya, Boihar and other neighbouring places. ^
In tho month of October, two Americans visited Maskat with tho object 0f
ctudying the date cultivation in Oman. They visited the interior in Compaq
with tho American Consul and eventually left for Basrah. Their visit to
interior however gave rise to an incident whioh may be of some interest,
their return journey, 6ome Bedouins of the Thabi tribe fired on the party
near Radda. Fortunately, no one was hurt and the explanation given {&[
plausible one that they were mistaken for a raiding party.
Two lists of subjects and protdgds of other Christian Powers, resident i*
                    Maskat, are appended.

                                                   crowded condition of the European
cemetery in “ 8haikh Jabir ” Core south of Maskat. The matter was brought
to tho notice of His Highness the Sultan who was graciously pleased to
place another small strip of coast line, also to the south of Maskat, at the
dispczal of tho European community of Maskat for the purposes of a nev
                    cemetery.
                                                            S. G. KNOX, Major,
                                                                 Political Agent and
                                                   Hi8 Britannic Majesty's Consul, Maskat.

Mote on the Mashat-Muttra hospital for the year ending 31st December
                    1012, ;7 Captain J. TV. Little, M B., B S., I.M.S., Agency Surgeon, Maskat.

The total number of out-door patients treated was 5,180, being nearly
double that in 1911. There were 150 in-door patients accommodated, against
142 in tho preceding year. Of these in-door patients 24 were Europeans and
American, chiefly belonging to the Navy. The number of operations performed
shows a marked increase being 140, compared with 99 in the preceding year.
This satisfactory all-round increase is in a great measure due to the patience
and tact displayed by Sub Assistant-Surgeon J. P. Mascarenhas who was in
sub-medical charge throughout the year, carrying out liis duties to my entire
                    satisfaction-
For nearly two months the hospital was without a Compounder, which
entailed . considerable inconvenience and extra work for the Sub-Assistant
Surgeon in charge. Eventually a youth, straight from school, was appointed
as Compounder, who promises to turn out satisfactorily as he is intelligent
hardworking and has made considerable progress during the short rime he
                    has been in Maskat.
The subordinate staff is inadequate, a ward-coolie or ward servant k
badly needed to help in the wards, to do the dusting of the hospital and clean
ing of the operation room, where the presence of a sweeper is not desirable.
The buildings are only in a fair state of repair owing to want of funds.

                                                      J. W. LITTLE, I.M.S., Captain,
                                                                 Agency Surgeon, Masked
                          Maskat, )
