             The Auxiliary in Emergency Management

The Auxiliary plays a role in supporting the Gold Side in emergency
management. Auxiliary members provide incident management,
logistic, and operational support (sea, land and air) during major
incidents, natural disasters, or large-scale planned events. The Auxiliary
program focusing on emergency and incident management is
coordinated under the Response & Prevention Group, comprised of four
distinct Directorates that manage the operational programs of the

Auxiliary. This includes the Response (R) Directorate (Aviation,
Surface Operations, and Telecommunications—it also has an Education
& Training Division), the Prevention (P) Directorate (Navigation
Systems and Marine Safety) and the International Affairs (I) Directorate. Emergency Management &
Disaster Response falls under the (Q) Directorate. It implements the Auxiliary Emergency Management
programs and provides alignment with the Gold Side; it manages qualification standards for Incident
Command Systems (ICS) and emergency management & disaster response to support the Coast Guard
          nationally.

As of April 2021, there is a new Coast Guard Emergency Management Credential (CGEMC). The
designation can be attained by any active duty (officer or enlisted), civilian, reserve (officer or enlisted),
or auxiliary member who meets the training, experience, and test c riteria, regardless of specialty or
assigned duty station or position. This credential is for Coast Guard members who have achieved a

superior standard of knowledge, skills, and abilities in the field of emergency management. Coast Guard
emergency managers are charged with creating the framework to prevent, protect, mitigate, respond to
and recover from crises, in keeping with the United States National Preparedness Goal. 
