BEING NOTORIOUS
by Grand Sire Archon Dwayne M. Murray
When we heard of the passing of Supreme Court Justice
Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a brilliant and noble leader who fought
especially hard for women’s rights, ensuring there was equal
justice under law, we were saddened. While she fearlessly battled cancer for nearly twenty years and fought the good fight, she never missed an opportunity to advance her noble agenda. A lady who stood tall at 5’0” and for twenty-five years served as a justice on the nation’s highest
bench, she leaves a legacy worthy of admiration.
While we mourn the life of this le- gal giant, let us all resolve in these coming days, weeks and months to ensure we honor her life’s work and that we work even harder for the rights of all of God’s people. As an individual who personally faced discrimination, she taught us how to build bridges with our adversaries and bonds with our brethren. We are, no doubt, in a season of unrest, but we cannot and must not rest!
During the last twelve months we have experienced the loss of civil rights leaders who fought so that we might have equality of opportunity to succeed. Among them are Archon Elijah Cummings, Archon John Lewis and now Jus-
tice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Archons and, especially, Archousai are better for Justice Ginsburg’s tireless fight for women’s rights and the rights of all who have been oppressed.
Ginsburg felt the sting of oppression; being discriminated against because she was Jewish, a wo- man, and a mother. Rather than living a life of bitterness and anger, she redirected those energies to fight for the civil rights and liberties we hold dear. And along the way she became “Notorious. ” As we mourn her death and the deaths of other icons in the struggle for justice and equality, I believe we have an opportunity before us. An opportunity to accept the torch that is being passed.
