Edged-Weapon Threats
THREAT: The assailant stands further away from you and presents the knife to
the front of your body.
DANGER: The threat may be the same as with the knife closer to the body but,
because of the distance, getting the second hand on quickly is difficult to do. The
knife is not necessarily held statically—the assailant may be moving it around,
giving directions, pointing, threatening, etc.
SOLUTION: Because of the distance, instead of controlling the weapon hand,
you should emphasize redirecting the weapon, counterattacking, and escaping or
attaining an object that may be used as a weapon or shield.
1–2. Using the palm of your left hand, redirect the weapon hand towards your
right with a quick, explosive striking movement to the back of the assailant’s
hand. Note: The redirection is slightly up, which yields less resistance. Your left
