Page 38 - The ART of Facilitation
P. 38
It's truly harder to have difficult conversations in the virtual world when we don't "feel" one another. We have to use other skills to help make the space safer. Also since we are all in boxes, we have to be even more intentional with facilitating voices into the room.
It's A Different World:
Recalibrate for Virtual/Remote Communication
The rhythm of remote/virtual communication is different than when we're in person. We don't have the same visual cues nor exchange of energy that happens in person to help us navigate our conversations. This may make it awkward.
We like to say that online communication is similar in rhythm and feel to a middle school dance. It starts and stops. We don't always know when, nor how to join in. Feelings get hurt. Toes are stepped on. And everyone can't wait until it's over.
It's helpful to acknowledge this difference in rhythm. Acknowledging the awkwardness helps normalize it. Not remove it, but normalize it.
