Don't Apologize: In person we tend to apologize often. Drop the apologies in virtual communication unless it's a serious situation that requires it.
Embrace Distraction: Without the visual stimulus of in-person communication, we can become distracted. Acknowledge this. Try doodling to help stay focused.
Ask Questions/Double Click: When something is not clear, you've missed something, or don't understand, ask a question with "how" or "what" to get clarification. Double click on ideas or words you need expanded or explained. Check-in with team members to be sure everyone is getting what they need from the meeting.
with different rules. Redefine Rude. Own the Awkward.
Allow for Odd Silences: The rhythm of remote/virtual communication is different. Allow for the odd silences that will occur. People may be trying to un-mute.
Story: We all create story. It's one of our greatest human gifts. In virtual communication we're still creating story based solely on the visual and this can create problems. Sometimes our stories are correct and other times they lead us astray. Be aware of when you are creating story. For example, "The people in the room are laughing. Story: They didn't like my idea." "Alex went off video. Story: They're not a team player." You may need to check-in in order to get clarification.
