It's A Different World:
Recalibrate for Virtual/Remote Communication
It's Awkward
The rhythm of remote/virtual communication is different than when we're in person. We don't have the same visual cues or exchange of energy that happens in person to help us navigate our conversations. This may make it awkward.
The Middle School Dance
We like to say that online communication is similar in rhythm and feel to a middle school dance. It starts and stops. We don't always know when, nor how to join in. Feelings get hurt. Toes are stepped on. And everyone can't wait until it's over.
Awkward Is Normal
It's helpful to acknowledge this difference in rhythm. Acknowledging the awkwardness helps normalize it. Not remove it, but normalize it.
