9 THINGS YOU CAN BE AWARE OF
TO UNDERSTAND YOUR RACIAL BIASES
Milagros Phillips
All humans have biases, but not all biases have a history that is
institutional and systemic. Not all biases have been internalized to the
point of impacting your personal and work relationships. You can
transform biases and to do so, a little self-awareness can go a long way.
1. Be aware of your own racial history, we all have one. We were
raised under a racial caste system, it could not be avoided.
2. Get comfortable with discomfort. Racism is an uncomfortable
subject. Let yourself BE with the discomfort.
3. Know your triggers. Are you triggered by certain words, attitudes,
other’s reactions?
4. Notice what you say to yourself about people that look or seem
different from you.
5. Challenge your assumptions.
6. Notice how you feel when you’re the only person in the space that
looks like you.
7. Notice how you react to the news, and BREATHE!
8. Notice how your body reacts when someone speaks with you
about racism
9. Understand that you won’t always get it right. Do your best!
