P. 68
To succeed is to see what I don’t yet see, 03
to hear what I yet can’t hear,
to taste what I haven’t yet tasted,
to smell what I haven’t yet smelt,
to feel what I haven’t yet felt;
to understand what I don’t yet understand,
all in good sense and measure.
And if I say thank you
for each of the painful and beautiful gifts
that come to my attention,
I would know that I have ignored none.
That would be a success too.
Then again,
if I speak responsibly and with measure,
if I listen carefully and speak frugally,
if I smile at the face of adversity,
if I laugh when I’m told that something is impossible,
if I give more and spend less,
if I’m consumed entirely by quests of love and care,
that would be a great success.
But if my daughter, Angeliki, experiences first-hand
that I love her with all my heart,
that would be my true success.
