The The The Valley Valley of of of of the the the Moon Moon Water District District originated from a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a collection of of of of private mutual water water companies which merged into a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a new publicly managed water water district The The The The District District encompasses a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a significant portion of of of of the the the the the area known known as as as “The Valley Valley of of of of the the the the the Moon” This well-known phrase comes from the the the the the the the Native Native American American word “Sonoma” “Sonoma” The The The The Native Native American American era ended in in 1823 but the the the the the the the name “Sonoma” “Sonoma” remained The The City of of of of of Sonoma Sonoma Sonoma adjacent to to Valley of of of of of the the the the the the the the the Moon Water District is is is is is is the the the the the the the the the oldest town north north of of of of of the the the the the the the the the San Francisco Bay incorporated in in in 1850 and also the the the the the the site of of of of the the the the the the most northerly mission mission of of of of the the the the the the 21 California missions The Valley of of of of the the the the the the the Moon Water Water Water Water District District began operations on on on on on on June 1 1 1 1962 with the the the the the the the acquisition of of of of the the the the the the the assets of of of of Sonoma Water Water Water Water and and Irrigation Company Company and and and the the the the the the the Mountain Avenue Water Water Water Water System In 1963 the the the the the the the District District acquired the the the the the the the facilities of of of of the the the the the the the Glen Ellen Water Water Water Water Company Company and and annexed its service area Customers enjoy a a a a a a a a a a a a a reliable water water water supply from from two clean sources The The District’s primary source source is is is is purchased Russian River water water water from from the Sonoma County Water Agency (SCWA) This water water water water is is is is is is is pumped over 30 miles in a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a below ground ground enclosed aqueduct The The District’s second source source is is is is is is local groundwater production which is is is is is is an an an an important source source for peak demand emergency capacity and and cost reductions Today the the the District District provides high-quality drinking water water to 23 077 people in in in in in in a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a 12 square-mile area area in in in in in in the the the Sonoma Valley The service area area area covers approximately 7 7 7 545 acres and and includes the the the the unincorporated communities of of Agua Caliente Boyes Hot Hot Springs Springs El El Verano Fetters Hot Hot Springs Springs Glen Ellen and and the the Temelec area area of Sonoma County The District is is also leading the the the the the the region in in in in the the the the the the adoption of of of information technology and and and innovative programs that enable them to to make the the the the the the the the the the best possible use of of of of water resources and and and strive to to meet and and and exceed the the the the the the the the the the expectations of of of of the the the the the the the the the the communities served by providing the the the the the the the foundation for the the the the the the the continued prosperity of of of of the the the the the the the Sonoma Valley For example the the the the the the the District finished replacing 100% of of of of its water meters meters with Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) meters meters in in fin in in in fiscal year 2020-2021 This new hardware is is fis is is accompanied by by a a a a a a a a a a system by by which customers can sign up for leak alerts or or track their own use
