The Red Well-Read Reader

        Story 86

                                                                        Badly Belted

Despite snow that had not begun to melt, they came

from all over the farm belt. Many svelte ladies came
wearing a fur pelt, escorted by gentlemen bundled in

felt. They came out to see the boxing bout between

Louis, the challenger and Braddock, the champ.

Everyone felt it would be a good fight; however, Louis welted and pelted the

champ with more belts than he had heretofore ever been dealt. Soon Braddock
was on the canvas, where on one knee he knelt, as he dwelt on flowers and how

         sweet they smelt.

         Story 87
                                               Bad for Her Health

"Lonnie," said her mommy, "any more cookies would be bad for your health.

Besides, we should preserve the cookie wealth, thus I shall shelve the other

         twelve."

But at her first chance, Lonnie used stealth, taking one after another through

         the twelfth.

"Daughter," said her father later, "you were told not to delve into the cookies

your mother shelved. Therefore you shall have a couple of whacks with the helve

of my ax for each taken of the twelve."
