The Red Well-Read Reader
Story 117
Our College Dean
Ms. Green, our student dean, possessed a foreboding
mien like that of a combat marine.
She wouldn‛t allow us to wear blue jeans or to read any magazines. Of course,
there wasn’t a canteen! She even prohibited tea and coke, citing caffeine. Five
days a week she had the cafeteria serve us baked beans and collard greens.
She claimed she wanted us lean; however, she suc•ceed•ed only in being awfully
mean.
Story 118
The Queen
Queen Josephine, only nineteen, is by far the most beautiful woman her kingdom
has ever seen.
She is always serene, with the most pleasing mien. She never vents her spleen or
acts the slightest bit mean. She is tall and lean. Her eyes are emerald green.
Her face is cover-girl clean, and her hair shines with lustrous sheen.
Her sense of dress is so keen that nearly an hour it takes her to preen. But she
always makes the most delightful scene, especially with King Constantine.
