Story 224
The Crows That Can’t Caw
Chief Big Paw makes tribal law; and his squaw, Long Claw, makes coleslaw. Big Paw
gnaws bear meat raw with a one-toothed jaw, and Long Claw draws soda through a
bamboo straw.
Although both are Crow, neither can caw. But their bird, a macaw, can caw.
Summer through fall they hunt along the Arkansas, from the river to Omaha. In
winter they mostly draw and play on a seesaw. Come spring,
when the river begins to thaw, they’ll hem and haw and hee
haw, then dive into the cold Arkansas and swim in the raw.
