A perfect example of a different approach to the boundaries
of an architectural project can be seen in Gallaratese Millan
in a project of Aldo Rossi in 1969. He was one of the first from
his generation to revolt against the Modernistic approach of
sharp boundaries. In this project, “Rossi opted for uniformity so
complete that it is almost startling. His inspiration came not from
Ancient Rome, but from the 1930s – specifically, the paintings
of Giorgio de Cherico”. He treated differently with borders
from what modernist masters like Le Corbusier did with his unite
de habitation. Each residential unit inside is accessible from a
gallery, while an open arcade, as minimalist and unadorned
as the rest of the structure, occupies the ground floor. Rossi is
known for its urban analysis and seeing architecture as an urban
artifact. 3
