The Choir Cometh
’Twas on a Monday evening up there in Hebron Hall,
With Deryck keen to lead us, our rehearsals are a ball.
Those brave top tenors agonize, yet even though they try,
They will need the operation if they’re going to sing that high.
Oh, it all makes work for the leader man to do!
’Twas on a Monday evening the second tenors came,
There isn’t many of ’em, but they’re sure to up their game.
it’s readily acknowledged they’ve the complicated part,
But they never do complain, they always sing straight from the heart.
Oh, it all makes work for the leader man to do!
‘Twas on a Monday evening the baritones came round,
They pride themselves on having the most natural male sound.
if you ever find one knocking on his own front door, you’ll see,
It’s because he’s back from practice - and he still can’t find the key.
Oh, it all makes work for the leader man to do!
‘Twas on a Monday evening the basses rumbled on,
They have a deep conviction they’re the best part of a song.
They seem to have a problem learning lines (it takes an age),
When they’re growling just a single note for ever on one page.
Oh, it all makes work for the leader man to do!
’Twas on a Monday evening, when Joy could not be there,
Then Hilary performed instead - still joyful, to be fair,
Enthusiasm is her style, note bashing undismayed,
As she hammers out our repertoire - the way Les Dawson played.
Oh, it all makes work for the leader man to do!
At Christmas on a Monday... we don’t rehearse at all.
So, our New Year resolution takes us back to Hebron Hall.
