he past few months have been very difficult for people all around the world. Covid-19 has taken
Ta toll on almost everyone physically, mentally and financially. The only group that might have
had a good time will be the pharma companies selling hand washes and sanitizers. It’s not that
they’ve predicted the pandemic (or maybe they did, who knows), but, their profits sky rocketed
since the month of March. As per the last week of July 2020, about 624 thousand people lost their
lives to this disease and more than 15 million are suffering from it. World economy is crumbling,
unemployment is at an all-time high, poverty is surging in a record speed; a lot more things are
happening as well and it is safe to say that the world is in total chaos. You know this, I know this,
everyone knows this. So, this is not going to be an elegy on what’s wrong Covid-19 has done to our
world, but the little things that are caused by this pandemic which could be viewed on a positive
note.
Let’s start with the obvious; yes - pollution. In case if you haven’t noticed, you’ve been breathing
relatively fresh air for the last three to four months. This is mainly because there has been a
significantly decrease in the number of vehicles on the road in almost every part of the world.
Lockdown, quarantine, work from home are some of the factors that kept people away from their
vehicles. Less vehicles means less carbon monoxide released into the air. Carbon emissions and
nitrous oxide emissions became so low that the earth scientists estimated that about 70000 lives are
saved indirectly. It’s not just the vehicles; factories, industries and every other source of pollution
have been rather slow in their quest of making the world dirty. That being said, global warming
is still a thing and if you think that this virus outbreak had slowed down global warming, you are
really, really, stupid.
The most beautiful thing the Pandemic was able to offer us was time. The pandemic presented
a once in a life opportunity to take a breather from your busy life and appreciate the little things
around you. People who’ve been working 24 hours around the clock in their office now worked in
the comfort of their home. This gave them more time to spend with their family and friends. People
get to talk and rekindle their relationship with children. People have now time to catch up with their
love life and they might get too caught up that UNICEF is now predicting a baby boom by the end
of this year. The pandemic persuaded people to slow themselves down and work on their mental
health in whatever ways possible.
Pandemic helped people unearth their creative side which, they thought they have lost forever and
they released these creative capabilities via social media. A massive surge in content uploads was
reported during the pandemic which correlates to a record watch time on social media platforms like
YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc. It urged people to do new things, like attending online
classes, hosting webinars and talk shows, starting social media channels etc. It’s not just social
media, people are now finding more traditional ways to spend their time - Some read, some write,
some paint and some walk around without wearing masks claiming that Covid-19 is a government
conspiracy. It is also a positive thing, because when the Pandemic is over, if the pandemic is over, it
would help us identify the idiots around us.
Covid-19 has also been responsible for an overall upliftment of hygiene, both personal and
societal. People have started using hand washes and sanitizers, a trend that was uncommon among
the middle and lower classes. It made numerous people start using hand kerchiefs, made them
