For much of the year, in what would be termed the "Outpost
War", fighting consisted of localized actions because much
of the fighting revolved
around the holding and
retaking of various combat
outposts along key pieces
of terrain. The United
States Marine Corps in
October had successfully
gone through "no man's
land" to the Chinese MLR,
North of Berlin and East
Berlin. These ridges and
outposts were places of
tactical importance which
the Chinese needed to take
before they could open up
an invasion route to South
Korea.
