The Secret Garden,
Hatchlands Park was built in 1756-c.1760 by Admiral the Hon Edward
st
Boscawen {1711-1761} a younger son of the 1 Viscount Falmouth, Hatchlands , Surrey
and for his wife Frances. The building and exterior were designed by Oil on panel 16 x 24 inches
the Architect Stiff Leadbetter and the interior by Robert Adam
{1725-92}.
Set behind the courtyard the secret garden is a secluded and intimate
garden setting. The summer intense light and resulting contrast of light
and shade which alternates the flower border colours has a dynamism.
The Artist’s wife Susan posed for the composition, lost in the inner
world of words and descriptions.
