The Iris and Peony Border is the first of a series of planted borders that is seen after making the climb
                                                                            along the Duke’s Walk from the castle grounds.
                                                                            Walking out from under the tree canopy of Blackberry Hill woodland, the walk opens out onto what
                                                                            appears to be a theatre stage setting. In this instance the bright summer morning light envelops the
                                                                            terraced gardens and surrounding woodland valley in a vibrant energising atmosphere.
                                                                            Where every element of the place responds to the light in brilliant colours and deep rich shades.
                                                                            The Duchess Garden is in fact a continuation of the Spring and Japanese Gardens but expressed more
                                                                            dramatically and expansively, free of the spatial confines of the castle grounds.

                                                                            Full advantage has been made of the location and escarpment where many views and vistas have been
                                                                            created by careful landscaping.
