Envisioning Heaven in Nature
The composition is based on a visit to Spetchley Park, Worcestershire .
The statue of ‘The Blessed Mother’ which is situated in the walled garden. As mentioned on the commentative plaque
‘This statue of our lady stands here in fond memory of St Mary’s Convent School Mount Battenhall, Worcester 1934-2014.’
Mount Battenhall was sold to a French order of nuns, The Sisters of St Marie Madeleine Postel 1756-1846.
Postel was a member from the Third Order of Saint Francis . Her beatification in 1908, was at Saint Peter’s Basilica, Rome.
The profound sense of contemplation and inner vision is a powerful image that can be experienced.
The compositional narrative centred on the statue expresses the oneness with nature and Divine communion which would
align with the life and legacy of Hildegard Von Bingen {1098-1179} 12th Century Christian Mystic.
Known as St Hildegard and the Sybil of the Rhine Hildegard was an influential and spiritual presence,. She was also a
visionary , composer of music, an artist and in addition wrote on medicine { Phsyica circa 1150 } which resonates to the
present day.
‘Contemplation is that condition of alert passivity In which the soul lays itself open to the Divine Ground within and without,
the immanent and transcendent Godhead.’
