The garden was originally the flower garden created by Henry Wise for the 1 Duchess,

subsequently laid to lawn by the 3 Duke and revised by the 5 Duke (who had planted

roses and shrubs in circular beds). The 7 Duke transformed the garden into a formal
setting. The present garden was created by the French Architect Achille Duchene for the
th
9 Duke and completed in the late 1920’s. The bright summer afternoon light with its
resulting casting shadows accentuates the formal style and structure, thereby creating an
air of grandeur.
