The present garden was created by Violet the 8th Duchess, through the commissioning of
Sir Harold Peto in 1906. Peto was a renowned garden designer working in the fashionable
                                         ‘Italian School’ aesthetic in England.

The Rose Garden was established on a previously developed terrace which was part of
Elizabeth’s Italian Villa and hillside setting which was created after ideas following a grand
tour to Italy with her husband John the 5th Duke of Rutland.

The new Rose Garden scheme incorporated statuary and an Italian column purchased by
Violet when on tour in Bologna Italy. The plans took full advantage of the steep terrain that
                                         descended to the Wildwood.
The late afternoon light casts partial shade onto the Rose Standards, whilst in full sunlight the
colours of the blooms are iridescent. The momentary ambiance of the scene contrasts with the
longevity of the castle and gardens existence.
